Control Theory

Control Theory is the idea that behavior is inspired by what a person wants most at any given time, not by external stimuli.

Teaching strategies

  • Use intrinsic motivations.
  • Don't use grades as a reward.
  • Avoid busywork (time-filler tasks that don't help real learning).
  • Encourage students who are highly motivated and learning well but not following a too narrowly prescribed approach.
  • Make sure assigned work meets students' felt needs.
