The L.Th.
L.Th.
Collated and edited by Ross Woods, 2026
Up until the 1980s, Bible college students in Commonwealth countries could earn their college's internal diploma. However, they could also take external examinations to earn the Licentiate in Theology. At that time, it was the main qualification available and the Bachelor degree was not well known.
Origins
The Licentiate in Theology degree originated in 12th-century medieval European universities as an official Church authorization granting a scholar the licentia docendi ("permission to teach") theology. Over the centuries, its purpose split into distinct Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Reformed traditions.
The degree evolved out of cathedral schools, such as Notre-Dame in Paris. It was not initially an academic degree, but a certificate issued by a Church authority (like a cathedral chancellor) verifying that a student was qualified to teach doctrine and combat heresy. It was a license to teach.
The degree was formally structured at the University of Paris under papal statutes in 1215. It served as the mid-tier bridge between the preparatory Bachelor of Arts and the ultimate Master or Doctor of Divinity. Students spent upwards of eight years attending public disputations, studying the Bible, and lecturing on Peter Lombard’s Sentences to earn the license.
The Roman Catholic Tradition (The S.T.L.)
Following the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church codified the qualification into a strict, uniform academic track. Today, it is known as the Licentiate in Sacred Theology (Licentia in Sacra Theologia, or S.T.L.).
- The 1931 Reform. Pope Pius XI standardized ecclesiastical degrees into a rigid "three-cycle" university structure: Baccalaureate (S.T.B.), Licentiate (S.T.L.), and Doctorate (S.T.D.).
- Modern Canonical Status. Under the Apostolic Constitutions Sapientia Christiana (1979) and Veritatis Gaudium (2018), the S.T.L. is an advanced, post-graduate research degree. It requires a minimum of two years of specialized graduate study beyond a standard theology degree.
- The Canonical Prerequisite. By modern Church law (Canon 378), an S.T.L. or higher is legally mandated for anyone who wishes to teach in Catholic seminaries or serve as a Catholic bishop or tribunal judge.
The Anglican and Commonwealth Tradition: The 19th-Century Pivot
By the early 1800s, critics argued that the traditional universities—Oxford and Cambridge—were failing to provide adequate, professional vocational training for ministers, focusing instead on basic scriptural exams for elite graduates. [1]
In England, the Licentiate in Theology (L.Th.) transformed from a medieval teaching credential into the primary, non-degree route for training Church of England parish clergy during the 19th and 20th centuries. Durham University introduced the Licence in Theology (L.Th.) when it opened in 1833.
It took on a highly practical, non-academic role centered on direct parish ministry rather than university teaching. It was designed as a brief, accessible, intensive two-year vocational track for men seeking ordination in the Church of England who did not need a full Bachelor of Arts. In this context, "Licentiate" meant a literal license from the university to present oneself to an Anglican bishop for Holy Orders. It emphasized practical pastoral care, Church history, and Hebrew. Crucially, it allowed non-graduates (men without a standard Bachelor of Arts degree) a direct pathway to ordination into the priesthood, serving as a literal university license certifying that the holder was competent to be ordained by an Anglican bishop.
Expansion and Abolition (1870–1949)
The L.Th. rapidly evolved to accommodate England's growing network of independent regional theological colleges.
- External Validation (1870s). Durham University opened the L.Th. to students studying at affiliated Anglican theological seminaries across the country without requiring them to live at the university itself.
- The Top-Up Route. After earning an external L.Th., a student could spend a single year in physical residence at Durham, pass their exams, and "top up" their qualification into a full Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree.
- Phase-Out (1918–1949). By 1918, Durham stopped teaching the L.Th. on its main campus, leaving it exclusively as an award for affiliated colleges. As standard undergraduate degree requirements became the norm for UK professionals, the domestic L.Th. was formally abolished in England in 1949 and was completely phased out of the domestic university system.
- Outside England. This practical model was exported across the British Empire. Theological and Bible colleges in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and The Episcopal Church in the United States adopted the L.Th. as a standard certificate of completion for seminarians who lacked prior university degrees.[1]
Academic Standing by System
Because of these branching histories, the Licentiate in Theology holds radically different values depending on the context today:
| Common Abbreviation | Current Academic Equivalent | Primary Function | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roman Catholic | S.T.L. / L.Th. | Above a Master's; comparable to PhD comprehensive exams | Mandatory qualification to teach in seminaries. |
| Anglican / Episcopal | L.Th. | Undergraduate Diploma / Certificate | Practical training and credentialing for local parish ministry. |
| Continental European | Lic. Theol. | Master of Arts / Master of Theology | Traditional standard university degree required before starting a doctorate. |
What degree came after the L.Th.?
The degree that comes after a Licentiate in Theology depends entirely on whether one is following the Roman Catholic academic track or the Anglican/Commonwealth vocational track.
- In the Roman Catholic System: The Doctorate (S.T.D.) In the Catholic ecclesiastical system, the Doctor of Sacred Theology (Sacrae Theologiae Doctor, or S.T.D.) comes directly after the Licentiate (S.T.L.). [1, 2]
- The Hierarchy: It is a strict three-cycle progression: S.T.B. (Bachelor) → S.T.L. (Licentiate) → S.T.D. (Doctorate).
- The Purpose: The S.T.D. is a terminal research degree. It requires the completion and defense of a major doctoral dissertation. It is the highest academic qualification in the Catholic Church, necessary to become a tenured professor in an ecclesiastical faculty. [1, 2, 3, 3]
In the historic Anglican and British Commonwealth traditions (such as in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada), the L.Th. was usually an undergraduate-level diploma, although in one case it was issued as an undergraduate degree and required a small thesis. The immediate next steps were undergraduate or postgraduate degrees:
- Historically, an L.Th. holder who wanted to advance academically would top up their qualifications to earn a Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) or a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.), although the B.D. was a graduate qualification.
- In some schools the following degree was done by research, and the qualification was called either a Scholar in Theology (ACT) or Fellow in Theology (CSR).
- Today, because the L.Th. has largely been phased out or replaced by standard university frameworks, it is typically succeeded by a Graduate Diploma in Divinity or a Master of Ministry, or a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) for those pursuing higher theological research or senior church leadership.
- Reformasi 1931. Paus Pius XI membakukan gelar-gelar gerejawi menjadi struktur universitas "tiga siklus" yang ketat: Baccalaureate (S.T.B.), Licentiate (S.T.L.), dan Doctorate (S.T.D.).
- Status Kanonik Modern. Berdasarkan Konstitusi Apostolik Sapientia Christiana (1979) dan Veritatis Gaudium (2018), S.T.L. merupakan gelar penelitian pascasarjana tingkat lanjut. Gelar ini mensyaratkan sekurang-kurangnya dua tahun studi pascasarjana khusus setelah menyelesaikan gelar teologi standar.
- Prasyarat Kanonik.
- Validasi Eksternal (1870-an).
- Jalur Peningkatan Kualifikasi. Setelah memperoleh L.Th. melalui jalur eksternal, seorang mahasiswa dapat tinggal dan belajar selama satu tahun di Durham, lulus ujian, kemudian "meningkatkan" kualifikasinya menjadi gelar Bachelor of Arts (BA) penuh.
- Penghapusan Bertahap (1918–1949).
Kedudukan Akademik Menurut Sistem
| Singkatan Umum | Kesetaraan Akademik Saat Ini | Fungsi Utama | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Katolik Roma | S.T.L. / L.Th.
| Eropa Kontinental | Lic. Theol. | Master of Arts, Master of Theology | Gelar universitas standar tradisional yang harus diperoleh sebelum memulai program doktoral. |
Gelar Apa yang Ditempuh Setelah L.Th.?
Gelar yang ditempuh setelah Licentiate in Theology sepenuhnya bergantung pada apakah seseorang mengikuti jalur akademik Katolik Roma atau jalur pendidikan kejuruan Anglikan/Persemakmuran.
- Dalam Sistem Katolik Roma: Doktor (S.T.D.). Dalam sistem akademik gerejawi Katolik, Doctor of Sacred Theology (Sacrae Theologiae Doctor, atau S.T.D.) ditempuh langsung setelah Licentiate (S.T.L.). [1, 2]
