Supervisor job descriptions

Appointment

  1. Heads of departments shall appoint appropriately qualified faculty members to form a committee for each research student.
  2. Appointment shall depend on each prospective supervisor's assessment of the student's statement of intent in their application.
  3. A supervisory committee shall have at least two members. (Modified Mar 13, '21)

All supervisors

  1. Maintain the institution’s standards and procedures, including:
    1. valid research design
    2. the authenticity of work
    3. suitable structure and layout
    4. appropriate critical thought and
    5. correct submission procedures
  2. Return student work promptly. If not returned with suitable comments within two working days during semester, give a response and indicate the nature and length of the delay.

Senior supervisor

  1. As a guideline, senior supervisors should meet with each research student weekly during semester as necesary.
  2. Liaise with other supervisors, the research committee, and the IRB.
  3. Provide sufficient support to give students a reasonable chance of success.
  4. Help students to develop their ideas.
  5. Oversee assessment at key stages:
    1. Proposal
    2. Mid-way review
    3. Preliminary submission
    4. Final assessment
    5. Oral defense

Other supervisors

  1. Liaise with other supervisors.
  2. Provide specialist expertise (subject matter, methodology, statistics, dissertation procedures, etc.).
  3. Participate in assessment at key stages:
    1. Proposal
    2. Mid-way review
    3. Preliminary submission
    4. Final assessment
    5. Oral defense
