Transfer credit: US institutions

  1. In principle, WU recognizes credit from accredited US institutions, but also requires that it be compatible with the particular WU program.
  2. The recognition procedure is as follows:
    1. The student sends WU a copy of his/her transcript.
    2. If the credit is more than 10 years old, WU will not recognize it. The transfer credit procedure is ended.
    3. WU checks that the issuing institution is accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education and/or CHEA, and makes a written record.
    4. WU checks its authenticity with the issuing institution by email or telephone and makes a written record.
    5. If the issuing institution has closed down but was accredited, then WU will check with the accreditor. (Normally another accredited institution takes over the records of the institution that was closed down and can still verify transcripts.)
    6. If the transcript is authenticated and accredited, then WU recognizes it.
    7. The admissions officer may now pass the application to the responsible faculty to evaluate the request for the transfer of credit.
    8. The student is informed of the decision.
  3. If transfer credit is recognized, it is then evaluated for acceptability into a specific WU qualification.
    1. The content reflected in the transcript must be comparable to the nature, content and level of learning experiences offered in the comparable WU units.
    2. In the Master degrees, transfer credits may not exceed 30% of the required credits.
    3. In doctor degrees, transfer credits may not exceed 15% of the required credits.
    4. WU reserves the right to determine whether all or part of a transcript can serve for transfer of credit.
  4. Possible evaluation outcomes:
    1. Transfer credit is awarded for specific WU units.
    2. Transfer credit serves only to admit a student into a WU program.
    3. Credit does not match any WU units.
