Student self-assessment tools
Self-assessment tools are a way for students to know whether they are ready yet for the full assessment. Prospective RPL students can also use them to evaluate whether this is the right course for them.
You can't count self-assessment in the real assessment, because students often think they can do something when they can't. "Self-ascriptive evidence" is things the students claim about their skills without actually demonstrating them, for example, an unverified CV. However, you can keep it on record as extra evidence.
The simple way is to give them a simple form to fill out. You can even stage the questions:
- Make the first group of questions fairly simple to give your students confidence.
- In the second group of questions, address the normal skill requirements of the job.
- In the last group of questions, address the more difficult aspects of the job.
You can also use the elements from the units, which are usually well-written and easy to understand. It's simply a matter of asking: "Can you already ...?", "What are the steps to do ...?" or "What might go wrong when you ...? How would you fix them?"
