Teaching observation (Activity)
Ross Woods, 2022
For each of the questions below, describe what the teacher did and explain the reasons for doing so. (Do not give tick-box Yes
or no
answers.)
Note aspects of the teacher’s performance that you would like to emulate in your own teaching.
- How did they manage space in the classroom? (e.g. location of furniture, spaces for students to move in appropriate). How effective was it?
- What did the teacher do to establish and maintain student motivation?
- How effective was the teacher in using all class time for engaging students effective teaching-learning? Consider time lost in class-room management, behavior management, lesson components that didn’t work (confusing, not engaging, etc.)
- How effective were their questioning techniques? (E.g. leading discussions, levels in Blooms taxonomy)
- How effective was the sequencing of lesson content?
- How effective was the teacher in achieving lesson goals?
- How effective was the teacher in achieving requirements of the mandatory curriculum?
- Were students mainly actively or passively involved? why?
- How effective was the teacher’s oral communication skills?
- How effectively did they pitch the lesson for students’ developmental level?
- To what extent has the teacher developed their own personal style?
- How effective were the teacher’s behavior management strategies? (Note: These might not be observable if the teacher has established norms with which students routinely comply.)
- How did they manage individualized learning, that is, teaching both the whole class as a group and also tracking the learning of each individual student, including attitude, academic ability, social-emotional development, socialization, disability, developmental variations, at-risk factors.
