Special weeks of semester
The first week of any semester is given to an introductory sessions. (Enrollment of fulltime students should be done before then.) This normally involves:
- Introduction of the teaching staff and students to each other.
- Explanation of what the unit is mainly about, why it is important, how you will approach it (and perhaps why you chose that approach), and perhaps discuss its central assumptions and recent history.
- Distribution to students of the unit statement, followed by a careful reading and discussion.
- Any special requirements (e.g. which books must be purchased, etc.)
- Answering any questions.
The last week of semester can be given to assessment exercises, which need not be traditional
exams. Alternatively, if assessment is done on anas you gobasis, the last week might follow a regular schedule. Check the consequences if students may request assessment as soon as they think they are ready. Some institutions have other special weeks: weeks free of class contact during semester to hold mid-semester assessments, run practicums, or give students extra time for writing essays.
