The internal context of your organization

This chapter goes through different aspects of your organization, evaluating each aspect as you go. The purpose is to:

  1. review your organization's performance and effectiveness as a whole and of its key systems
  2. identify aspects that need to change
  3. explore a full range of possible alternative solutions and evaluate each one.
  4. recommend changed organizational practices and procedures based on your performance evaluation.
  5. establish strategies to monitor and evaluate systems performance
  6. present your findings in writing at a professional level.

You need to look through all of them before you can consider making decisions. Treat your conclusions very tentatively because none of them give a complete answer in isolation. You might change your mind on what changes you need when you have the big picture. For example, you might be very happy with your core team at present, but might find later that they don't have all the skills you will need for a major strategic change.

Some might be more important than others in some circumstances. For example, a non-profit organization might see success as something other than making a profit. Service organizations aren't as dependent of raw materials as manufacturers.

You might not like some of them. It would be a mistake to overlook an aspect that indicates your organization is unhealthy or in danger.
