What would you most look for in a propective Board member?
These are the results of a discussion with Sυrεsh Μυrti on the question, What would you most look for in a propective Board member?
- Character and wisdom
- Wisdom is not the same as knowledge. One can acquire knowlege by study, but not wisdom. It includes knowing when to speak and when to be quiet.
- Honesty and godliness
- Can you trust them with tasks and responsibilities?
- Humility. Be willing to get outside advice, for example, legal or accounting advice. You can simply pay for it, and you don't need to have it on the board.
- Basic biblical knowledge; it is difficult to guide a Christian organization without it.
- Pastoral awareness to watch over the flock.
We also noted that arguments
are not necessarily bad. Done well and with humility, people can use them to improve ideas and create better solutions. Iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17) People need to know how to say, “I understand what you say, but could you explain more where you’re coming from?”
