Dear Mr. Scrooge,

Thank you for your letter of 11th December, 1923.

Mrs K. Woffledum asked me to read your letter to her and then to respond to you on her behalf.

She had not anticipated such a letter and found it quite upsetting, as she is in very difficult circumstances and has no ability to provide payment. Consequently, she has placed all children exept the youngest into an orphanage, believing that Saint Nicholas’s is the best option available for the children’s future. She plans to move in to the understair room of her sister-in-law’s house in the East End.

With great reluctance, she agrees to move out as soon as practicable, although it might take more than two weeks to sell her belongings. We ask only for leniency of another seven days to ensure that she dispose of her property.

I remain
Yours faithfully

B. Leafgreen
